Introduction

At Alianza my primary focus has been the video meeting experience within the Alianza UC App.

I personally designed the entire experience from the ground up, navigating tight deadlines and working across multiple development teams—all while hiring and managing a growing UX team.

The Alianza UC app is critical in attracting new customers.
It's our chance to make a good first impression.

A high bar for excellence

People expect video meeting tools to be seamless and highly refined—anything less feels jarring and unusable.

With the rise of remote work, people now have a baseline expectation for essential features:

  • a mirrored video feed

  • speakers in large meetings surfacing to page 1

  • clear chat notifications

  • emoji reactions

  • Picture-in-Picture mode

  • shared screen indicators on windows being share

  • Intuitive participant views.

  • And on and on

If these elements are missing or poorly implemented, the experience becomes frustrating, pushing people back to Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet.

Our goal was to create a streamlined alternative—everything users need, nothing they don’t. A tool that lets customers work efficiently without forcing them to pay for another service.

I worked closely with developers to design a clean, intuitive experience—one that not only impressed existing customers but also attracted new ones.

The first version and fast follow redesign

When I joined the company there was a frantic push to get the video meeting feature built and deployed.

Alianza hired a development team in India that promised to build the app in a matter of months. They were ready to start within weeks of me joining the company which meant they needed designs asap.

I threw together some initial designs that worked well and allowed us to hit our deadlines but the design was bland.

After launch, we needed a refined UI that felt modern, intuitive, and aligned with the rest of the app. I led the full redesign, focusing on:

  • Consistency: Integrated the new component library to match the rest of the UC app.

  • Usability: Simplified layouts, cleaned up controls, and reduced friction in key interactions.

  • Visual Polish: Updated color schemes, spacing, and hierarchy for a modern look.

Here is our before and after.

This project was all about balancing speed with quality. We shipped the first version under extreme time pressure.

Then I redesigned the UI to be cleaner, more intuitive, and visually aligned with the main Alianza UC app. I created a scalable design system for long-term consistency.

Together with the in house dev team we improved the product’s credibility, making it competitive with Zoom and Teams.

The app has received extremely positive feedback from leadership and customers, validating the improvements.
